Pope and Young, America’s leading bowhunting conservation organization, is excited to announce a new world record Columbian Blacktail. Pope and Young announced thirteen new world records at their 33rd Biennial Convention in April of this year, with this incredible buck topping the charts in the Typical Velvet category for Columbian Blacktail.
Gregory “Levi” Wing shot this incredible buck in Marion County, Orogen on August 29th, 2021. Levi’s score was confirmed at the February 2023 Pope and Young Panel Verification in Reno, Nevada.
“After two months of studying this deer’s pattern and gazing at it through my spotting scope, August 28th, 2021, finally arrived – opening day” stated Levi Wing. “After what felt like an eternity, he finally stepped into an opening at 68 yards. I steadied myself, loosed my arrow, and it struck true. After allowing him to expire, I was awarded the opportunity to put my hand on the most beautiful buck I could have ever imagined.”
“When Tim Tuttle (Levi’s taxidermist) called me and sent me pictures of Levi’s velvet blacktail, I seriously got very excited,” stated Tim Rozewski, Pope and Young’s Director of Records. “Knowing that this buck would very likely score very high, I didn’t want to give him any expectations until it was measured and accepted. Being that I cannot accept entries for P&Y that I measure, I patiently waited until our Records Chairman approved the entry after I submitted it. Being a boundary species, all concerns were quickly erased when the kill location was revealed to P&Y that it was well over 20 miles within the boundary. Although knowing it would likely be the World Record at our Convention of 2023, I chose not to tell my friend of his accomplishment until the day of our awards. He was as thrilled as expected!”
